(January 25, 2010; Henderson, Nev.). St. Rose Dominican Hospitals began offering WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program services in early January at its Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center of Excellence in Henderson.
“Nationally, more than 9 million women, infants and children received WIC benefits in fiscal year 2009 with nearly 68,000 northern Nevada residents served,” said Rod Davis, president of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals. “There are limited WIC services in the southeast and Henderson areas of the valley, so it is our hope that by bringing WIC assistance to our Henderson WomensCare Center we will be able to help fill an unmet need for southern Nevada residents.”
The WIC Program provides nutritious foods, nutrition counseling, nutrition classes, breastfeeding support and referrals to health and other social services to eligible participants at no charge. This federally funded program is operated by the Nevada State Health Division to improve the health of Nevada’s residents.
“The WomensCare Centers help thousands of pregnant and new moms each year with prenatal education, breastfeeding support, breast pumps and new mommy mixers,” said Holly Lyman, director of the Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Centers of Excellence. “The WIC program is a perfect fit because it allows us to provide more services for these moms and babies.”
Families with moderately low incomes who have children under the age of five or mothers who are pregnant or breastfeeding can qualify for the services offered by this program which also offers car seat safety checks and help finding physicians or clinics.
